Downtown Pomona rocks again!

February always brings a busy Art Walk and this one was no exception. Exceptional art, music venues, crafters, gourmet food trucks, fine dining, farmers markets...all added up to a very full and very busy Art Walk in downtown Pomona. The Farmers Market alone registered over 4,000 visitors, the Glass House sold out as did the Fox theater with Mr. Snoop Dogg performing. Restaurants and pubs were full to capacity. The crowds ranged in age from infants in strollers to geriatrics in adult strollers. By all accounts last night was a winner!

$10 donation at the door

OAC’s Art for Awareness 2011

Oceanic Awareness Collaboration and Andi Campognone Projects are proud to present the 1st annual Art for Awareness Benefit. A one night event Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 6 – 11pm, featuring art work by 50 artists from around the country and as far away as the UK and Indonesia.

This exhibition and sale is a mix of all genres of art; from fine art to graffiti, sculpting to tattoo art. There is something for everyone in this auction not only visually, but also financially. You will find semi-expensive originals to lower-priced limited rare prints. OAC is asking a $10 donation at the door, inside you’ll find a wide variety of art, drinks, food, and live music out on the patio space. The bidding will stop at 10pm. The gallery is located half a block from Acerogami (The Glass House Bar) and the after party will be held at Acerogami.

Art for Awareness 2011 is a creative effort to raise global awareness about the North Pacific Garbage Patch and the negative effects of plastic pollution. OAC has partnered with Guided Discoveries to also use the proceeds from this art sale to provide scholarships to a number of students with financial needs who apply to attend the Catalina Island Marine Institute summer camp. Those receiving scholarships will be in the age range of 8 – 17. OAC is a non-profit organization formed to use art, music, and fashion to raise environmental awareness to the youth culture through creative outlets.

“The mind is a fertile canvas where concepts are born and ideas are harvested. Three seeds were planted in the thoughts of visionaries and from them came forth the hybrid known as OAC. Art, Music, and Fashion would soon thereafter come together to alter the worlds view of our habitat. OAC is growing against the grains of normalcy to bring the worlds wounds before the public eye. We are here to inspire change, and provoke attention.” - Clay Wendel, President & Co-Founder

OAC sets its scope on all things ocean related and not widely addressed. The current plan, a specific focus, takes aim at the North Pacific Gyre, which has a problem that has been labeled “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. We realize that one non-profit organization can’t make it stop, but collectively we can urge the world to change the circumstances. OAC and Algalita Marine Research Foundation have teamed up to tackle the Garbage Patch in a new way, this New Year. Proceeds will also go to fund Algalita summer 2011 research voyage to the North Pacific Gyre. This is the first of many creative collaborations to come from the minds behind OAC.

Participating artists include The Clayton Brothers, Dave Kinsey, Dennis McNett, Jason Limon, David P. Flores, Arkiv Vilmansa, Roland Tamayo, Mike Stilkey, Aunia Kahn, Mr. Jago, Cate Rangel, Adam Wallacavage, Craww, and Ben Horton.

Plus 40 other artists, for the complete line up and more information please visit http://www.oacollabo.com/.

2011 Miss Pomona Finalists Selected

DPOA AND MISS POMONA PAGEANT COMMITTEE

ANNOUNCE 2011 FINALISTS

POMONA, Calif., (January 12, 2011)—The Downtown Pomona Owner’s Association (DPOA) in collaboration with the Miss Pomona Pageant Committee, is pleased to announce the three finalists for the 2011 Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant.

After interviewing a group of eight semi-finalists, the DPOA and Miss Pomona Pageant committee have selected Jessie Gomez (11th grade), Diamond Ranch High School, Danielle Cruz Garcia (11th grade), Diamond Ranch High School, and Mansi Patel (12th grade), Village Academy High School, to advance forward as this year’s three finalists.

“Selecting the three finalists for the Miss Pomona Pageant was not an easy process. Each candidate that we interviewed was incredibly special in her own unique way.said Mickey Gallivan, Co-Chair of the Committee. “I am so very proud of all of our candidates this year. They all are exceptional, and each truly winners.”

Proceeding onto the final round of the competition, each of the three finalists will be required to present a prepared speech based on a specific topic relevant to Pomona, at the grand coronation ceremony upon which a distinguished panel of judges will then decide on who will be crowned the next Miss Pomona. The evaluation of the next Miss Pomona and her Court will be based on academic scholarship, leadership skills, involvement in school and community activities, and written and verbal communication skills.

With the grand coronation ceremony scheduled to be held at the Pomona Fox Theater on January 22, at 5p.m., this joyful event is projected to be splendid.

“The Fox Theater is an enduring icon of Pomona and we are very excited to be able to host this year’s Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant at such a symbolic venue,” said Gallivan.

The newly crowned Miss Pomona and her court will be awarded scholarship money, as well as be given a full year of special appearance opportunities on behalf of the City of Pomona. Additionally, the winner of the Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant will also be able to apply and compete at the Miss Teen California pageant if she desires to pursue another pageant.

“We consider it an honor and a privilege to be awarding scholarship money to the newly crowned Miss Pomona and her court,” said Larry Egan, DPOA Executive Director. “This tradition is a great opportunity for Pomona’s most promising young ladies to be recognized for their academic achievements and community involvement - and as a result we are delighted to have them represent our city.”
