THE MISS POMONA SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANT 2010
Miss Pomona Pageant Committee Announces Judges and Initial Sponsors

POMONA, Calif., (October 23, 2009) - The Downtown Pomona Owners Association will host and serve as the primary sponsor for the Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant this year. Returning from a two and half year hiatus, the Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant ceremony is scheduled for January 23, 2010, at the Pomona Masonic Lodge in Downtown Pomona (395 S. Thomas St., Pomona, CA 91766).

“The Miss Pomona Pageant is a very special event to many residents. We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring this experience back,” said Lorena Matarrita, Co-Chair of the Miss Pomona Committee and Miss Pomona 2004. “The pageant, which has gone missing since 2007, will return and a very deserving young lady will be crowned Miss Pomona.”

Applications have gone out to all the high schools in Pomona and various community centers. To participate in the pageant, ideal candidates must be an unmarried Pomona resident, under the age of 21, and be a current student of junior or senior status attending high school in Pomona with a GPA of 3.0 or better. There is no talent requirement; however she must be ready to highlight her involvement in her community, and be prepared to properly represent Pomona at various events. There is no financial cost or obligation to the applicant or the applicant’s family. The Miss Pomona Pageant Committee will provide finalists with appropriate attire, hair-do and make-up on the coronation date.

“The committee is expecting more applications this year than in previous years,” said Mickey Gallivan, Co-Chair of the Miss Pomona Pageant Committee. “The Miss Pomona Pageant is such a fun and exciting event - I don’t see why any young woman wouldn’t want to be a part of it.”

Plans are to notify all eligible candidates, then move the interview process along to a coronation. Points will be awarded by the judge’s panel consisting of distinguished Pomona community residents and members such as Cal Poly Pomona’s Director of Community Outreach Jonnie Darshan-Owens, President of Western University Dr. Philip Pumerantz, President of the Downtown Pomona Owners Association Carolyn Hemming, Pomona Unified School District John Avila and the Daily Bulletin’s David Allen. Judge’s decisions will be final. The crown and title of Miss Pomona 2010 and her court will be held by the winners until the next Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant court is announced.

“We are excited to be giving away a minimum of $2,000 in scholarship money to the newly crowned Miss Pomona and her court,” said Gallivan. “The success of this pageant will be contributed to our generous sponsors who have supported us with no hesitation.”

“It’s great to have the privilege of supporting such a worthy opportunity,” said Rick Hoffman, President/CEO of the Inland Empire Credit Union. “The promise shown by all of the contestants and the winner should not go unnoticed. Inland Empire Credit Union hopes our donation rewarded for the poise and intelligence displayed by these young ladies will allow them to further their education.”

“I am always happy to contribute to Pomona, especially when it is for a great cause like awarding scholarship money towards hardworking and ambitious young people, to pursue an education in their chosen interest,” said Mangit Singh, owner of several 7-Eleven stores in the region. “I know this tradition will encourage Pomona’s upcoming youth to set goals and accomplish their dreams, too.

Other sponsors include Valley Vista Services, UPS Store 5894, Pomona Historical Society, Women of the Moose Pomona Chapter, and Savoie Hair Salon. Ms. Sheila Pilon, from the Savoie’s, will be doing hair and make up for all finalists. Additional sponsors of the 2010 Miss Pomona Scholarship Pageant will be announced in the event program.
